The Kilmallock Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1841 at a cost of £8,212. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 800 inmates. The Kilmallock Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Ardpatrick, Ballinlanders, Ballinlough, Ballinvana, Ballyshoneboy, Bruff, Bruree, Cahercorney, Dromin, Glenroe, Glinbrohane, Gallbally, Hospital, Kilfinnan, Kilflyn, Kilmallock, Knockaney, Knocklong, Mainsteranenagh, Tankardstown, and Uregare.
From 1920-1921, the Kilmallock Owkrhouse was partially ocupied by military forces. It was then closed as a Workhouse and designated as a place to be used for industrial activities.
The Kilmallock Workhouse site is now occupied by a council depot with few of the original buildings surviving.
