Alice Murphy aged 16 was transported to Australia. She sailed on the Tippoo Saib, arriving in Sydney in July 1850. She was one of the Earl Grey Irish girls. Prior to sailing she lived at the Gorey Workhouse. Alice is my 2 x Great Grandmother.
The Gorey Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1842 at a cost of £6,700. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 500 inmates. The Gorey Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Ballycaneu, Ballyellis, Camolin, Coolgraney, Courtown, Gorey, Monomolin, Rosmanogue, Wells, and Wingfiel.
During the worst years of the Great Famine, extensions were put in place to accomodate a further 80 inmates.
The Gorey Workhouse site is now in use as a Business Park with very few original features still standing.

My Great Great Grandad died in Gorey workhouse infirmary on February 3rd 1884 . I went to visit a couple of years ago and saw how the O Sullivan family have renovated the site where the people were buried. It is a beautiful place now. At the back of the industrial area.I took some photos but not sure if it’s possible to share them. They have done a remarkable job . Had a mass said and it up an altar and a grotto and stones to mark the people who died it was very moving tribute.
