The Castleblayney Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1842 at a cost of £7,439. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 800 inmates. The Castleblayney Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Annayalla, Ballybay, Bellatrain, Broomfield, Carrickaslane, Castleblayney, Churchill, Creeve, Cremartin, Greagh, Laragh, and Mullyash in Co. Monaghan, and Camly, Creggan, Crossmaglen, Dorsy, Sheetrim, and Newtown Hamilton in Co. Armagh.
The Castleblayney Workhouse was closed in 1921 and the buildings were repurposed as the county home. The site is currently occupied by St Mary's Hospital and a number of the original buildings are still standing.
