The Ballymena Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1840. The Workhouse was opened in 1843 at a cost of £8,400. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 900 inmates. The Ballymena Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Ahoghill, Ballyclug, Ballyconnelly, Ballymena, Ballyscullion, Broughshane, Clogh, Cloghogue, Dundermot, Dunmanaway, Dunminning, Galgorm, Glenbuck, Glenravil, Glenwhirry, Kells, Kirkinriola, Lisnagarran, Longmore, Newtown Cromellin, Portglenone, Slemish, and Toome.
The Ballymena Workhouse site is now occupied by the Braid Valley Hospital with many of the original buildings still standing.
