Michael CONNOR, son of Mick CONNOR, was born ca. 1828 in County Kerry, died on 31 Oct 1888 in Harden, New South Wales, Australia aged about 60. Burial Notes: Roman Catholic section.

Michael arrived in Australian Colonies ca. 1849 according to his death certificate. He was a soldier in the 11th Foot Regiment.

Michael married Bridget RYAN,daughter of Thomas RYAN and Bridget, on 24 Sep 1855 in Parish Of St James, Sydney, NSW. Bridget was born ca. 1834 in Trim, County Meath, Ireland, died on 1 Oct 1892 in Harden, New South Wales, Australia aged about 58.

  • This is my GG Grandfather! Is this an actual photo of him? If so I would love to know the source. Ive been researching him for a while and would love to know where he lived - his parents, occupation. I want to know why he joined the British army (11th Reg) - Im assuming poverty/ famine possibly...? 

    He lived at Victoria Barracks in Sydney and was a warden at Darlinghurst goal, had 10 children and was insolvent at one point. He was married at (Anglican) St James church in Sydney, though his descendants were all Catholic- I noticed he was buried in Catholic cemetary. If there are any other references , I would love to know of them, and my thanks to you for uploading this info!  Cathy Connor (Melbourne Australia)

  • Hello cousin! Michael is my 4th great-grandfather. I’m descended from his son’s (Michael James) daughter, Margaret O’Connor. Another cousin of ours, who is also in Melbourne, has done a large amount of research and gave me an incredibly well referenced genealogy of the Connor/O’Connor family which includes photos. If I recall correctly, she said that Michael’s photo was on his grave.

    Which of Michael’s sons are you descended from?

    I don’t know much more than you already know, but I’d be happy to chat further and put you in touch with our mutual cousin I believe would be willing to share her file of research and the genealogy that she compiled.

  • Hi, thanks so much! That would be great. I’ll try and send a private message via this site if possible. My grandfather was  Frances Edmun Connor, son of Patrick Connor & Edith Mary Steele ( son of Michael/ Bridget). I also have a photo of my grandfather at beginning of WW- in Australian army uniform visiting Killarney when on leave. I’m guessing visiting his roots & maybe extended family.   • Im not sure that the name "Mick" in the attached article https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/115588550 refers to Michael (1828-88) or his (unknown) father. The article states that Jack (the 9 year old's grandfather has recently past away- the date is 1920.As Michael James O'Connor passed away in 1919 that would be likely to be referring to him.

    It seems that the reference to an "Uncle" Michael O'Shea could probably be Michael's (1828-88) mother's brother.(?)

    There is an extensive family tree created by Matt Falvey http://falvey.id.au/pedigree.php?personID=I6730&tree=falvey with lots of info re Michael's decendants but not ancestors.

    Also the Turnbull tree includes the Connors. (see link below)
