Mary Anne Downes of Doonbeg was the mother of US vice president Mike Pence's maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Maloney (1901-1980) who was born in the US.
In 1900, Mary Anne Downes departed Queenstown (Cobh, Co. Cork) aboard the Etruria and arrived in New York on 5 May 1900. Mary was listed alongside 3 other Doonbeg natives: George Clancy (age 30, US citizen), Patrick McDonnell (age 22), and Susan McGrath (age 20).
The Census record reveals that this family were Irish-speaking and would have been known locally as Ó Dubháin.
She married James Michael Maloney, from Killaloe, Co. Clare and raised a family in Chicago, Ilinois. Their daughter Elizabeth Maloney (1901-1980) married Richard Michael Cawley from Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo who arrived in the US in 1923 and also raised their family in Chicago.
Downes was sometimes recorded as Daines, Dwane, Duane, Dooan.
