St Mel's Catholic Cathedral

St Mel's Roman Catholic Cathedral is located in the civil parish of Templemichael in County Longford.

Construction of the Cathedral began in 1840  but was halted in 1846 due to the Great Hunger. Building works did not resume until 1853.

The Cathedral is built on a cruciform plan, which is typical of Roman Catholic churches.

Additions were made to the building in 1889 and 1893.

Changes were made to the altar in the 1970's.

St Mel's is still in use today as a Roman Catholic Cathedral, and there is also a museum/gallery on the site.
