Lord William Beresford was born in Mullaghbrack, County Armagh on the 20th of July 1847. His father was a Church of Ireland minister and the 4th Marquess of Waterford. He was educated at Eaton and Bonn.
At the age of 20, Beresford enlisted in the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers and was sent to India.
During the Zulu War of 1879, Beresford was made a captain. On the 3rd of July 1879, he was in Ulundi, South Africa when a Sergeant Fitzmaurice got into trouble. His horse had fallen and rolled on him. Beresford went to help Fitzmaurice get to safety. A large number of Zulus were fast approaching, but Beresford succeeded in getting the wounded man mounted onto his horse and retreating to safety.
For his bravery on that day, Beresford was awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross.
After the Zulu War, Beresford returned to India where he held a position on the staff of the Viceroy, eventually achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Beresford died in Surrey on the 30th of December 1900.
