William Courtney was my 2nd great-grandfather. He was born in about 1842 to William Courtney and Maria Hewitt. His marriage to Agnes Rutherford (1846-1873) took place on 12 October 1865 at the Tartaraghan Church of England and Ireland - William was a farmer, full age, farmer, his father William Courtney a weaver - Agnes was a minor, daughter of John Rutherford, farmer - the witnesses were George Courtney (William's brother) and Mary Orr. William and Agnes had three sons and a daughter born at Drumanphy and Cranagill, Tartaraghan; and Ballygausey, Loughall. The eldest son William John died of typhoid fever on 15 November 1873, followed by that of his newly born brother the next day and their mother two days after that. William Courtney remarried 17 months later to Elizabeth Camblin at the Armagh Registrar's Office on 15 April 1875. The witnesses were John Conlan (sic) (Elizabeth's brother) and Sarah Courtney (William's sister). Elizabeth had a daughter already and she and William went on to have five daughters and three sons. They lived in The Annagh near Portadown and later in Coronation Street, Portadown. William had a horse and cart and probably worked as a rag-and-bone man as well as a labourer. He was found dead in his cart one morning outside his house in Portadown.
