Daniel was born in Ireland, presumably in or near Dalkey. His birthyear is from multiple US censi, the month is given in the 1900 US Census. Based on the same sources, he emigrated somewhere between in 1869 and 1875. With such a common name, I have not pinned down the immigration record. He married Mary Foss at age 36 in 1890 in San Francisco but I have not figured out where he was or what he was up to between his arrival in the U.S. and his wedding.
Daniel had two sisters Elizabeth (1848-1914) and Rosanna (1856 - ?) who wrote Daniel a series of postcards from back home in Dalkey between 1912 and 1919. I have xeroxes of this series. I believe they were both spinsters who lived together as indicated in the 1901 and 1911 Irish censi. From the postcards, I learn that their father's name was William and that they had a brother named Martin. They lived in a house identified as Cintra on Sorrento Road towards Killiney Hill. Through Ancestry, I have found Dalkey baptismal records for Elizabeth and Rosanna that indicate that their mother's name was Catherine.
