Matthew Costello (c.1789, Tipperary) was a farmer who was born to a farming father, believed to be named John Costello. Matthew married Ann O'Meara around 1813 in Tipperary.
Matthew Costello and Ann O'Meara had 10 children. In Ireland were born: James (c. 1812, Puchane, Tipperary), John (c.1814, Tipperary), Winifred Sevena (c. 1816, Tipperary), Thomas (c.1821, Tipperary). It is believed that all these sons passed away early in life.
The family Migrated to Ontario, Canada around 1821-22. Once there were born: Matthew Jr. (b. 12 Oct 1823, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), Mary (c.1824, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), Annie (c.1826, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), Eleanor (b.9 May 1827, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), Michael (b. 16 Dec 1829, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), and Catherine (b. 12 Oct 1832, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada).
In the 1850's the family moved to Clinton county, Iowa, United States, where Matthew died in 1865.
In 1829 Mathew Costello is listed in "The McCabe List", a survey of the Irish working on the Rideau Canal who were asking assistance from the Crown in bringing over family left in Ireland. Mathew asked for his brother, Michael, and a brother-in-law, William Scully and families. Mathew states he was from County Tipperary, Cloghprior Parish.
Taken from "HELLO NEPEAN" a history of Nepean township, Ottawa, Canada, written by Sara Craig- " In 1833 a Catholic Chapel was completed in Fallowfield, Carleton County, Ottawa, Canada. It attracted a number of Rideau Canal workers to the parish. The first trustees of the parish were: Dan Fogarty, Matthew Costelloe, and Dennis Tierney.
