Migrated to/Born in USA

Susan was born in the townland of Derrylea, the parish of Crosserlough, Oldcastle, Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan in 1879.

Her mother was Mary Reilly nee Monaghan and her father was Edward Reilly. Susan was the youngest of the family, she had four sisters and one brother, my grandfather Edward. two sisters died in early life, Mary and Anne. Margaret was the oldest, born in 1868 and Bridget born in 1876 both emigrated to America Margaret in 1922 and Bridget around 1896.

Susan left for America in 1915 and settled down in Manhattan and stayed at 257 west 30th street New York. I dont know much more about her after this I know she died around 1925 but can't find any death certs of census with her on it. I would love to know the answers to these questions.

I have a photo of the grave of Susan but again I dont know where it is.

Comments

  • Quick comment on the question of where Susan Reilly is buried.  If you look at the picture posted of her gravesite, you can see a surname on a headstone in the back of that picture.  On Findagrave, there is a photo for a Andrew J Hanley that looks like it could be the opposite side of this maker.  The cross on top is a match to your photo.  Link to Hanley's findagrave page to see cemetery and plot location.:  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/126102439/andrew-j-hanley

Given that, this Hanley could buried a few rows behind Susan Reilly.  You might check that route.  Just because she doesn't have a page on Findagrave doesn't mean she's not interred there.  Other clues in the picture might help if this isn't a good option.

Hope you find your ancestor this weekend!

  • One additional note....looks like there is a Susan Reilly interred in same cemetery noted in above comment, see findagrave page:  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/174571569/susan-reilly

You might check to see if this is your Susan Reilly.

  • Thank you for your input into my question about Susan's grave, I have looked at the two photos of the grave stones and the grave behind my Susan's, although is a Hanley does not match your one, it is different in that one has the name Hanley at the very top of the stone and the other one hasn't but tks again Edward

  • Hi Edward, I agree the stone In your photo looks different from the findagrave stone, which could be the other side of the stone in your photo. If you note the direction of the cross in each photo...looks like it’s reversed - meaning it your photo is showing one side of the stone, and Findagrave photo is showing the back side of the stone. The Susan Reilly that is found in this same cemetery as Hanley is very close in the death date you stated. I’m not saying that this is your Susan, but look for all the clues in your photo and don’t write off the “view” of a particular photo was taken in. The cross at the top of that Hanley headstone is unique and distinctive. You may still want to check and see for sure that that isn’t the same cemetery for your Susan.
    Best of luck!

  • Tks again, and I see what you mean about the headstone but usually the front of the headstone is where all the inscriptions are put and I think in my photo this headstone is facing front like the one in front of it, the Susan in this graveyard you sent me died in the 1800s while my Susan died around 1925/6

  • Hi all tks for the feedback on Susan Reilly . I have been in contact with the Hanley family and they told me that they have found the resting place off my Susan Reilly and sure enough it is the right grave, they sent me a picture of the grave which is not too far from their family plot and I found out that Susan died in 1927 and not in 1925 as I thought. I would like to thank the family for finding the grave,
