Ann O'Meara was born to a farming family in Tipperary, Ireland c.1794.  She is the oldest of 4 known children born to Thomas O'Meara (c.1770, Kilbarron, Tipperary) and Mary Grady (unknown, Kilbarron, Tipperary).
Around 1813 Ann married Matthew Costello in Tipperary. Matthew Costello and Ann O'Meara had 10 children. In Ireland were born: James (c. 1812, Puchane, Tipperary), John (c.1814, Tipperary), Winifred Sevena (c. 1816, Tipperary), Thomas (c.1821, Tipperary). It is believed that all these sons passed away early in life.

The family Migrated to Ontario, Canada around 1821-22. Once there were born: Matthew Jr. (b. 12 Oct 1823, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), Mary (c.1824, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), Annie (c.1826, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), Eleanor (b.9 May 1827, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), Michael (b. 16 Dec 1829, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), and Catherine (b. 12 Oct 1832, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada).

In the 1850's the family moved to Clinton county, Iowa, United States, where Ann died in 1864 followed by Matthew in 1865.
