  • My 2x great uncle, M P Ryan emigrated to Canada, landing in Montreal, Quebec in 1840. He married Margaret Brennan, their son and only child, passed away from childhood illness at age 12, so no direct descendants. His younger brother Cornelius Ryan, b.1828, my 2x great grandfather emigrated along with their father William Ryan b 1793 and mother Mary Tierney b 1799 and settled in Chambly Quebec, southeast of Montreal. Cornelius married Catherine Purcell b.1823, Ireland. Cornelius son Martin b.1857 first generation born in Lower Canada, worked the farm in Chambly and bought land in Mont Ste Marie, West Quebec, about an hour north of Ottawa. Martin married Mary McCormick b. 1863, Lower Canada aka Quebec. Martin and Mary had 13 children, my grandmother Mary Susan Ryan b 1899 was the third youngest. The village had so many Ryans it became officially known as Ryanville and is still known as Ryanville today, although my grandmother's siblings disbursed as far as California to the west and Boston to the east. The family farmhouse still stands today and has been a BnB for a time. I have a hunch I'm related to about half of the Ottawa valley, also due to my paternal Mullin ancestors.

  • Hello Irish Eve,

I too have connections to the Ryans, Purcells & Mullins of the Gatineau Valley area of Quebec that you speak of thru my Hayes Family. I am trying to trace back to Ireland some of my Hayes line. Michael Hayes married a Joanna Mullen(Mullins) in East Schull I think. I dont have the record but I have the records of 3 of their 6 children born in Ireland before coming to Canada. They were in the Goleen records of East Schull. There are some Ryan's in their as well. I am very aware of Ryanville (Lac Sainte Marie). A Samuel Lord married a Catherine Mullen in Chelsea and they donated some of their land to the Catholic Church upon which St. Camillus was built in Farrellton. I am familier with Cornelius Ryan / Catherine Purcell. I believe Catherine had a sister Mary Purcell who married a Thomas Hayes back in Ireland before settling in Lac Sainte Marie(Ryanville). I have Mary Purcell's parents as Nicholas Purcell/ Mary Allen. I also have the marriage of their son, Nicholas, to Margaret Collins at the Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal. This record lists Nicholas and Mary Allen as his parents. I figure most of the people that settled Ryanville came from Tipperary. So I would like to know if you want to share some info. Now I know you may not have any Hayes info but I would be interested in any Mullin, Ryan, and Purcell info you may have.

  • Hi Mark,

Can you illustrate your direct lineage to the Mullins? I haven't researched much beyond my direct lineage as  there are far too many people involved. The Ryans especially had huge families.

  • Hello, I'm chasing a Cornelius Ryan who married Joanna Ryan, both of Grange, Donohill.
Obviously not the Cornelius listed above, but have you by chance found another Cornelius around Donohill?

  • Hello again Irish Eve,  Sorry I took so long to reply. I dont know if I have my settings for this site set right but it does not notify me if I have a reply to a post.  Can I suggest we take this discussion off site where I can easily share more information on the Hayes- Mullins tie in you asked about. I have a Joanna Mullen (Mullin) married to Michael Hayes. Also a Catherine Mullin married to a Sammuel Lord. Sam Lord donated the property tha St Camillus was built on in Farrellton Quebec. I have the girls father being a Jeremiah Mullin and mother beinf a Catherine Donovan. Not sure of this but that is why i would like to talk further on the Hayes/ Mullin tie ins in the Gatineau Valley. I think we can do this easier by regular email as I can send you data easier that way. My email is marren86@comcast.net.

Hope to hear from you Mark Smith
