John Grady appears to have been registered at birth and baptism as John Gravy. He is recorded in England as Grady. This change is not limited to him as his bother Patrick who emigrated to the United States also used the surname Grady. He was born on 16 January 1877 in Derrynabaunshy the son of John GRAVY and Bridget DEMPSEY. According the Attymass parish records he was baptised on the 6 December 1876. This date is before he was born. One possible explanation is that his parents gave a fictitious date of birth so as not to incur a fine its late registration. He is thought to have done seasonal work in England prior to emigrating sometime between 1901-1911. He married Winifred Murphy in Barnsley in 1911 and together they had nine children. He worked as a coal miner in and around Barnsley and Doncaster. He died in Doncaster in January 1958.
