Migrated to/Born in USA

Born 29 JUN 1873, Inishnee Craobh, Connemara, Galway, Ireland. John Nee came to the United States with his family around 1885. They settled in Superior, Wisconsin, and John later made his way to St. Paul. His parents settled later in Chicago, IL.

At some point in the 1920s, John Nee started going by the name Daniel Needham (it took me 25 years to find out what happened to him after 1920). He was married twice more. He lived a long life, dying on March 15, 1963 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Buried at Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights, Minnesota.

  • John Nee (sometimes he went by "John Needham") was my paternal great-grandfather. He was around 10 years old when his parents emigrated from Connemara to the United States in the 1880s. They may have been part of the Tuke's Scheme, but I'm still not certain of that - I do know they did not settle in the original planned township of Graceville, Minnesota. They initially settled in Superior Wisconsin and John worked building breakwaters on Lake Superior. One of his later occupations has him working as a stationary engineer. He married my great-grandmother Margaret Claugherty (Cloherty) in 1896. They had at least 5 children, 4 of whom lived into adulthood. The marriage did not last and Margaret divorced him in 1905, but they were back together again as of the 1920 Census and living in St. Paul, Minnesota. The last indication I have of John's whereabouts was an entry in the 1924 St. Paul City Directory. Thereafter he disappears into the ether; I have not been able to find a death certificate for him in Minnesota or Wisconsin, and I have no traces of where he might have gone after 1924.
