King John's Castle is located on the banks of the River Shannon in Limerick's city centre.
It was built in 1210 on the orders of, as the name would suggest, King John.
The strategic position of the castle made it an important site throughout the Medieval period.
In 1690 the castle walls suffered some damage during the Siege of Limerick.
At one point the govenment built affordable housing within the walls of King John's Castle, so there is a generation of Limerick city natives who can honestly say that they grew up at the castle. The houses were removed in the 1990's.
Today it is open to the public for tours and interactive Medeival experiences.
