Migrated to/Born in UK

My maternal great grandfather, John Noonan, came to Scotland in the 1860s. He may have come here via Rock Ferry in England. He settled in Dundee where he married a Catherine Logan at St Mary's Church on 31st December 1869 (Hogmanay).

He was born at Springvale, Kildorrery in early 1842 and was baptised there on 11 February that year. His father was James Noonan and his mother Johanna Duane. I think that James Noonan may have been baptised in Cahirduggan, Doneraile on 3rd April 1819. Similarly, Johanna Duane may have been baptised in Cornahinch, Doneraile on 10 March 1824. I have all the certificates and evidence for the following; the marriage of James and Johanna in Kildorrery on 17th March 1840 and the baptisms of their seven children: Patrick Noonan was baptised a few months before James and Johanna's marriage in 1839, John (my maternal great grandfather, who came to Dundee) was baptised in 1842, Thomas (1844), Denis (1847), Catherine (1849), Margaret (1852) and Johanna (1854). James Noonan is mentioned in his son's, John's death certificate at Newport-on-Tay, Fife, Scotland. It is noted that he was a Land Steward.

Apart from John coming to Scotland, I have failed to find any further leads with regards my family in Kildorrery. No other members came to Scotland. I have a tentative link to some Noonan relatives in Rock Ferry but nothing definite.

I would be most interested in any information that would add to my family story.

  • I'm not sure this is helpful, but will send it along in case it is.  I found a baptism record for Patrick Nunan (Noonan) on 25 Nov 1824 in Cullinagh (near Kildorrery).  Father's name is also Patrick Nunan; Mother's name Mary Coughlan; Sponsors were Mary Gallagher and Edmond Keas.

I descend from Edmond Keyes (Keys, Keas, etc) and have been collecting names of others from the area of Graigue, Cullinagh, Kildorrery etc. in an effort to find more information about him and possibly more links to family.  Here is a link to the record on the NLI Catholic Parish registers - https://registers.nli.ie/pages/vtls000634240_010

I wish you well in your research!

  • Thanks Mary Anne for that information but I cannot find any links with my Noonans. The spelling Nunan is also used sometimes with my family ancestors but Patrick Noonan (my great-grandfather John Noonan’s oldest brother was baptised in Ballyvisteen, Kildorrery on the 6th November 1839. His parents James Noonan and Johanna Duane were to marry on the 17th March 1840 in Kildorrery - just over 4 months later. Image removed.

I am a 66 year old Scot who has Irish antecedents on both my father's side of my family and my mother's side of my family. The Nolans came from Longford, County Longford and the Noonans from Kildorrery, County Cork.
