Denis, my great grandfather, was one of 8 children to Denis Keeshan and Ann Cahill. 7 migrated to Australia, some in 1853 & the rest in 1855 as unassisted immigrants. My Denis had his deposit paid by his elder brother John, but did not come out in the 2 years that his siblings did. I suspect (with no proof!) that he may have sailed to America to try his hand at gold mining. The 1st time he is recorded as being in Australia was when he was issued a publican's licence in 1879 and then in 1880 when he married in Sydney. I have found no record of his arrival. Denis died in Sydney in 1920, on his death certificate he is aged at 86, so born c.1834. Some of the current family are of the opinion that the family came from Ennis, Co. Clare. I tend to think Roscrea, simply because one of his sons, my grandfather Martin, a sentimentalist, named his house 'Roscrea'. So not scientific.
