James Bennett was born in Roscrea, Tipperary in 1804. He married Elizabeth Sinnett in Dublin in 1830. James was a farm labourer and Mary a farm servant. James and Mary embarked on the Woodbridge which left Cork on 9 November, 1841. They were Bounty passengers under Mr Thomas Gore & Co of Sydney with their passage costing £19 each. Upon their person they carried Baptismal certifiates signed by Rev, T Ryan of Roscrea and References from Messers Edward Forrest and Moses Wood. The Woodbridge arrived in Sydney on 8 March, 1842. Their contact in Sydney was Mr John Church.
James and Elizabeth had ten children - nine boys and one girl - William, Oliver, John, Joseph Francis, Mary Ann, James Henry, Theophilus Augustus, George, Henry and Michael Alexander. The children born before 1841 were left in the care of the Parish Priest Rev at Roscrae while James and Mary sailed for Australia. William, Oliver, John, Mary Ann and James sailed on the ship Sir Edward Parry, arriving in Sydney in 1848.
James and Elizabeth became respected members of the Catholic community in Scone, New South Wales.
