The father had accidentally killed James's brother when an axe head flew off. Arrived in Sept in New Zealand on the Basque Princess a 464 ton vessel,which was owned by Taylor and Watt and sailed under Captain Huntly. The cargo was whiskey and brandy and the trip took 6 months and 5 days. He evidently offered or gave him the deeds of the farm but after having an argument with his great Uncle tore them up. Military 1867 - 1869 • Wanganui He fought in the Kai Iwi Calvery where he served under Captain J Bryce in the Maori Wars defending Waitotara, Maxwell, Waverley, Patea and Hawere in the Defence of the Weraroa Redoubt. Occupation 1863 • Kai Iwi, Whanganui, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand He also worked on a farm at Kai Iwi, Wanganui for Moore and Curry as a farm labourer. Destination 1869 • Wanganui River James was one of the first white men to travel up the Wanganui River. Occupation 1870 • Riverton Estate, Wanganui he helped Mr Richardson who owed the "Riverton Estate" build the original woolshed on the property. He also was roadman for the county at some stage and planted a row of poplar trees on the boundry of Riverton and the road, some of which are still standing Marriage to Ann Mainstone (1860-1949) 1886 9 MAR 1866 • Wanganui 9 March 1886 • St Marys, Wanganui, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand Ann was 26 and James 42. Had a family of 7 all born in Wanganui. He first met Ann when he was employed to accompany her through hostile Maori territory to a job at a farm. This was many years before they married. Residence aft 1886 • Wanganui After their wedding they lived in Aromoho before they moved to Alexandra Street in Wanganui as their eldest daughter was born there on the 18th December 1886. John was born when they lived in a house that was next to Ngutiri school on Jimmy Hunters farm. Residence 1890 • Fordell, Whanganui, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand The house was apparently bought for Ann by her children because her husband was given to drink and had no income. Residence Abt. 1890 • Wanganui He also worked for Henry Sargent who owned "Oeta" before Hunters bought it. They also lived on "Woodburn" while working for Cranstone who had bought "Riverton" and "Woodburn". James and Annie retired to Fordell.
