  • Francis McKiernan pictured above is my great grandfather.  My grandfather emigrated to the United States in approximately 1912 leaving behind his mother, father and some siblings.  Is there any additional information on his father and mother, in particular,.   I would like to know when they purchased the land they farmed in Mohill, Leitrim?   I believe a female McKiernan married a Hunt neighbor who was Protestant. She was Catholic. I  also heard that the McKiernan's purchased the land from their son-in-law whose last name was Hunt.   I think this may have been Francis and Catherine Moran's child who married Hunt?  That would make her Francis McKiernan (above) sister.  Thank you for any information you can provide.

  • Children of Francis McKiernan (unsure when died but before Catherine approx 1854) and Catherine Moran (died 1869) are as follow:-

Terence McKiernan married Catherine Hunt (proestant)  had 6 children one of whom, Rose Ann migrated to Australia

Hugh McKiernan who migrated to Australia prior to 1853  - our direct line

Francis McKiernan who married Brigid O'Reilly above, one son Bernard became a priest and migrated to Australia

other children include John, Bernard, Patrick.  I am unure of daughters

There is also a George McKiernan who married Bridget Mahon who's daughter Susan a nurse migrated to Australia and is related to the family

Have not been able to find date of when farm was purchased.  1857 lessor was Crofton.

Not sure where Francis McKiernan and Catherine Moran were married or where they lived  prior to moving to Curraun.

  • This is confusing because of so many of the same names, my father Hugh, was one of Francis and Bridgets children.  Other siblings were Margaret, Philip and Terence who all emigrated to the US.  John, the youngest, inherited the farm in Currawn, which was sold about 20 years ago by his daughter in law.  I believe Mary Kate also stayed in Ireland.  My father emigrated in 1912,

Bridget, another sibling, was blind, never married and lived and died in Curraun.  Bernard, as in the previous post, became a priest, emigrated to Australia and died there, I believe he was in his 50's.

There is a list of those living in Curraun in the 1901 census.

    Hope this helps someone!!

  • My great grandmother, Annie McKiernan, born 1875, emigrated from Molhill to US in 1893.  Her parents, Patrick McKiernan and Bridget Creed (Bohan?), remained in Molhill as did her brothers Thomas, Patrick and Peter.  Any relation?

  • Thank you for your quick reply.  This is my great grandfather.  My grandfather, Hugh McKiernan, emigrated to the United States in 1912?  He married Beatrice Gilmartin in Brooklyn, NY.  She was also from Leitrim.  They met on the boat coming to America. My grandfather emigrated that year but my grandmother was coming back to the U.S. after a visit home.  My father, Francis McKiernan, was born in 1921 and his brother in 1923.  Unfortunately, my grandmother died shortly after Hugh McKiernan, Jr. was born.  My father passed away in 1999.  His brother, Hugh, died in the 1980's?   I will upload their pictures at a later date.  My aunt, Marie nee McKiernan sent this photo to me when it first appeared about a year ago.
