  • Bernard was the brother of my 2nd Great Grandfather John.

Parents: James Carroll and Catherine Flynn (Flinn)

Bernard was one of seven children born to James and Catherine. James, Catherine and 5 of the children emigrated to Australia on board Perry Commodore and arrived in Sydney on 1 May 1856. The two eldest, Mary and Ann emigrated to Australia a year or two prior to the rest of the family.

Bernard married Mary Collins at St Mary’s temporary cathedral on 26 January 1867. The current Cathedral was under construction at that time.

Died 30 December 1913, Darlington, Sydney, New South Wales. Buried at the Catholic Cemetery at Rookwood

  • Bernard was actually one of 8 children, 6 of whom travelled to Australia with their parents.

  • Yes, 1 of 8.
Quite funny that there was a John Bernard Carroll AND a Bernard John Carroll. My grandad was Leslie John Patrick Carroll, son of Leslie Leo Carroll.

  • Very odd. Perhaps Bernard had some significance in the family... Do you have any information on the family? I'm interested in James' occupation in Ireland and why the family came to Australia - the famine had been over for about 7 years prior to their departure.  It seems that James and Catherine gave false ages at time of departure - 46/47 when their death records show them as being 10 years older. It's also interesting that the two older girls left Ireland a couple of years before the rest of the family (Bounty women perhaps?). I'm also looking for details on both James and Catherine's parents plus any other information on them.

  • Not sure. Anything I've stumbled across stops at James being born in 1799. I think someone mentioned they thought he was a grocer. But my great uncle tried to find info years ago, but apparently alot of the churches had been burnt down, so records were lost. What side of the family are you related to...Carrolls?

  • Yes, my 2nd great grandfather was John Bernard, great grandfather Isaac James and grandmother Rachel Jane Carroll. The Catholic Church in Ferbane was located in a couple of different locations from early 1700's. A more permanent church was built in its current location in 1820's and was replaced in 1890's. It has had a couple of additions since then. I'll have to do more digging to see if public records for the area were lost in the fire that destroyed the public records office in Dublin.

I've pretty much got nothing but a marriage record for James and Catherine. Even finding birth records for the children has proven difficult.
