This is a photo of my grandmother Helene Maude aka Ellen Saunders and her Grandmother Mary Collins Saunders. Mary was born in Cork c: 1813. She met Michael Saunders and they sailed with their young son William in 1832 to Prince Edward Island, Canada. Mary and Michael raised all their children in Bloomfield, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Mary died after 1890 and we believe she is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Indian River, Prince Edward Island, Canada.
I would love to have known her. Family lore says she was studying medicine when she met Michael and fell in love. I have contacted the medical schools in Cork, only to be told the following. Because she was a female she would not have been listed on the Rolls, however, there is a strong possibility that she could have been in school there learning under one or more of the professors.
