Ann Boyle was born in Carlingford. As a child in the 1880s she moved with her family to Coatbrdge in Scotland near Glasgow. Her father and her older brothers found work in the local Iron Works. In 1900 she married James McCann of Coatbridge. In 1914 the McCanns moved to Warrington, Cheshire.
