My great-great-grandfather, James Downes, was born in 1818 in St. Mary's Parish to Laurence Downes and Eliza Williams. He joined the British Army and served for 21 years, of which 9 years were spent in India, and several months in the Crimean War. Upon discharge, he settled in England, anglicized himself by joining the Church of England and marrying an English woman, Rebecca Taylor, in Lancashire. His granddaughter, my grandmother, did not know that he was Irish and looked down her nose at the Irish!
