John was born to parents Cornelius Troy and Mary O'Brien around 1798. He married Mary Maher probably in the mid 1830's. When he and Mary emigrated to Australia in 1851-2 five children emigrated with them [ Mary, Cornelius, James, Hanora and Michael] they listed Tipperary as their native county. John and the family moved to the area around Colac Victoria and took up farming. John died in October 1862 at Colac age 64.
