John Fagan (1827-1902), together with his sisters Mary, Catherine and Bridget and brother Christopher were born in Balnavine, Parish of Fore, Westmeath, Ireland. His father was James Fagan, his mother was Julia Sharry whose people had come into Westmeath at an earlier date from Longford County. Family tradition said that the Sharrys had suffered greatly in earlier times at the hands of the English, everything was taken from them, including house, lands and livestock.
