Hugh Fay was born in Tullyvin in County Cavan in about 1843, to parents Hugh Fay and Susan McCabe. There are several references to Hugh Fay in the 1800s in County Cavan. One record from the 1821 census shows a Hugh Fay aged 7, living with his parents Bernd (47 - labourer) and Ann (35), sisters Mary (11) and Rose (5), and Ann's father Thomas Coyl in House 18 in Corcloghan, Castletara, COunty Cavan. Perhaps this Hugh might be my Hugh's father? But other than this snippet I have no firm evidence to confirm Hugh junior's parents, date and place of birth. He emigrated to Australia in 1863 aboard the Beejapore, which took on Irish passengers at Queenstown (now Cobh) on 24 March 1843. The ship's passenger list shows him travelling as a a single male aged 19. He disembarked the ship at Keppel Bay and proceeded up the Fitzroy River to Rockhampton. He married Mary McCaffrey in 1882 in Queensland. Mary was originally from Killyfana, in the parish of Annagh, County Cavan, born 1857. She had travelled to Queensland in 1880 aboard the Scottish Hero, travelling as a single woman, aged 18. Her stated age in the passenger list, and her reported date of birth do not match exactly. Hugh and his wife Mary had nine children, all born in the Queensland districts of Normanton and Hughenden, and all verified in Queensland Birth registrations. Hugh's death registration names his parents as Hugh Fay and Susan McCabe. Mary's death registration names her parents as Patrick McCaffrey and Bridget Gaffney, and apparently living in Killyfana, parish Annagh, County Cavan in 1857. Griffiths Valuation 1857 has several records for Patrick McCaffrey as a tenant on farms in the Killyfana district.
