He arrived In Australia on the 13 November 1817 on the Barque "Matilda" which was a convict transport ship. I believe he did more than one of these escort trips before he married Mary Gowen in 1821, and they were shipped off to India with the Regiment. (Sergeant) William Henry Jones left the 48th in 1840, being discharged in Gibralta, and made his way to Brisbane, Australia. Here he became the Sergeant of the Moreton Bay Barracks. In 1848 there was a large earthquake in Wellington NZ which killed the Sergeant of the Wellington Barracks, William was sent over to take up this post. | |
Place of Death | William Henry Jones died on the 14 December 1881, in Wellington at the age of 83 years old. Note, some records show his birth date as 1795, and on his headstone it shows his age as 86 years old, this I believe is an error. His discharge papers show he enlisted at age 18 years old in 1816, which makes his birth as 1798, making his death age 83. |
