My wife is hoping to apply for Irish citizenship through her Irish-born Great Grandmother, Mary Ann Gilmore. The only clue we have as to her place of birth is in the 1901 Census, when she is living in Leeds and she gives her birthplace as Ireland (Ballymena). We've tried searching the Ballymena Parish records for a record of her Baptism but without success.
We believe that she may have emigrated with her family as a young girl to Scotland where they settled in Glasgow, possibly at 50 Dalmarnock Road in the Bridgeton area of East Glasgow where many Irish immigrants lived.
Facts we know of her life are that, at the age of 21, she married Edwin Richardson (aged 23) on 18 October 1873 at the Roman Catholic Church of the Edwards in Clifford, North Yorkshire. On the marriage certificate, Edwin's occupation is given as an Engine Tenter and Mary Ann's a Millhand. Her father is named as Alexander Gilmore who was also an Engine Tenter. I believe that they all may have worked at the local flax mill in Clifford which attracted a number of Irish workers at the time.
She died in Leeds on 29 September 1909, aged 57, under her married name, Mary Richardson. According to her death certificate, her husband, Edwin Richardson, was a Corporation Labourer. They lived (and Mary died) at 3 Aylesford Avenue, Leeds which was in the East of Leeds where many Irish people settled.
