John Francis Tehan was born on 3 Jan. 1878 to Martin Tehan & Winifred Leonard in Ballinlough townland in Kings County ( County Offaly).
Martin & Winifred emigrated to America with their seven children from Queenstown (Cobh) on the SS Wisconsin on 6 June 1883. They arrived in New York City on 19 June 1883. They were processed through Castle Garden. John was 5 years old at this time.
Four years later, the family had moved to St. Louis, Missouri.
He married Mary Agnes Crosson on the 29 Nov 1905. She passed away after childbirth in 1914. They produced 5 girls from this union.
He subsequently married Genevieve Elizabeth Noonan on 22 Sep. 1919. John Francis Tehan & Genevieve Elizabeth Noonan were my grandparents. They produced 4 sons and 2 daughters. He was very active in the Knights of Columbus and was instrumental in getting a catholic students home built on the edge of the University of Missouri in Columbia. That students home is currently the Lutheran fraternity on the campus but still has the marble inscription from the Knights of Columbus above the front door. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was involved in many organizations and activities for the town of Columbia.
He passed away on 26 Sept. 1930 after complications from surgery. He became the assistant superintendent of Hamilton Brown Shoe Company in Columbia, Missouri. He had been employed for 40 years with the company. He is interred in the city of Columbia Cemetery
